“…Seed germination in situ has rarely been quantified for C. jamaicense (Alexander, 1971), possibly because germination of C. jamaicense is inherently low, even in controlled environments (van der Valk & Rosburg, 1997;Leeds et al, 2002;Smith et al, 2002). Nevertheless, periods of warming and dry conditions are likely to increase germination (Lorenzen et al, 2000) and probably also enhance rates of seed decay and disappearance. This problem may be partly avoided by counting C. jamaicense seed fragments, which were identifiable in our soils and also have been identified in seedbank studies elsewhere in the Everglades (van der Valk & Rosburg, 1997).…”

“…The treatment was replicated five times. Low-oxygen treatment was undertaken by employing the method described by Lorenzen et al (2000). Twenty milliliters of double-distillated water (previously flushed for 15 min with N 2 gas) was added and the vials were flushed for 2 min with 800 ml min )1 of the same gas before being sealed.…”

“…Colonization of gaps then may not be restrained by inundation. It is known that seeds of various wetland species can readily germinate when submerged (Leck, 1996;Lorenzen et al, 2000;Morinaga, 1926). Since the temperature amplitude is small beneath an insulating cover of water (Thompson et al, 1977) those seeds are not expected to be stimulated by daily temperature fluctuations.…”
