Seed Invigoration with Paclobutrazol Improves Seedling Growth, Physiological, Biochemical Attributes and Fruit Yield in Okra

Abstract: The production of okra is affected by improper seedling growth and abiotic factors like temperature and soil. This study was aimed to examine the effect of paclobutrazol (PBZ) seed priming on the growth, seedling vigor and yield of okra. A pot experiment was conducted in completely randomized design under natural conditions and seeds of two okra varieties were soaked in 0, 4, 8, 10 and 20 mg L-1 of PBZ solution. Results showed that PBZ seed soaking affected the germination rate and maximum reduction in germina… Show more

“…Similar to our findings, Kamran et al. (2018) and Bashir et al. (2021) reported that root diameter, root-length density, root-surface area density, and root-weight density increased in maize and okra in response to paclobutrazol, respectively.…”

“…In the present study, the paclobutrazol, JA, ABA, and MT pretreatments improved average root diameter, root volume, and total root surface area compared to the CK. Similar to our findings, Kamran et al (2018) and Bashir et al (2021) reported that root diameter, root-length density, root-surface area density, and root-weight density increased in maize and okra in response to paclobutrazol, respectively. Furthermore, by controlling the physiological and biochemical responses of the plant, JA is one of the main hormones that promotes tolerance to abiotic stress (Sheteiwy et al, 2021).…”

“…of PBZ did not affect the root dry weight. Interestingly, other studies obtained different results wherein PBZ application negatively affected the root system of banana (Chang et al, 2019) and okra (Bashir et al, 2021), while in other works, PBZ improved root system of corn (Kamran et al, 2018b) and rice seedlings (Huang et al, 2019).…”
