Seed transmission of Plectosphaerella cucumerina, causal agent of leaf spot of Diplotaxis tenuifolia in Italy

Abstract: Eight seed samples of wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) obtained from commercial seed 9 lots used for sowing by farms severely affected by Plectosphaerella cucumerina, were assayed for 10 the presence of the pathogen. Isolations were carried out on subsamples of seeds (400)

“…For instance, in the case of Plectosphaerella cucumerina , a percentage of infected seeds as low as 0.15% may be important in disseminating the pathogen in wild rocket crops (Gilardi et al. 2013b). Seed infections also contributed to the introduction in Italy of the Fusarium wilt agents for the first time observed on both the rocket species (Garibaldi et al.…”

“…At the usual sowing rate for this crop of 2-g seeds per m 2 corresponding to 1000 seeds/m 2 for cultivated and 10 000 seeds/m 2 for wild rocket, also, a low percentage of contaminated seeds are enough to favour the spread of the disease, as already observed with other pathogens. For instance, in the case of Plectosphaerella cucumerina, a percentage of infected seeds as low as 0.15% may be important in disseminating the pathogen in wild rocket crops (Gilardi et al 2013b). “…Certainly, the occurrence of the pathogen on seeds (Gilardi et al, 2013b) complicates disease management and favours the spread of the pathogen.…”

“…The occurrence of P. cucumerina on wild rocket seeds is one of the causes of the spread of the pathogen to new cultivation areas (Gilardi et al, 2013b), further complicating disease management.…”

“…P. cucumerina je opisano kao uzro nik truljenja korena drugih hortikulturnih kultura (Carlucci et al, 2012;Palm et al, 1995). Ovaj patogen se može prenositi semenom (Gilardi et al, 2013a).…”
