Seeing the next iphone coming your way: How to anticipate converging industries

Abstract: The blurring of boundaries between hitherto distinct scientific disciplines, technologies or markets is a common and powerful phenomenon. Traditionally, it has been discussed in respect to telecommunications, information technologies and electronics. Subjects of this convergence often change what and where customers buy, with Apple's renowned iPhone being one current example for customers' tendency towards products with multiple benefits. More recently also the chemical and its related industries find themselv… Show more

“…After a pre-test on the basis of a SciFinder Scholar sample with 7,455 references, we examined a STN AnaVist sample of 3,836 references. After introducing our concept (Curran et al, 2008a, Curran et al, 2008b and discussing it in greater detail Leker, 2009a, Curran andLeker, 2009b) in earlier publications, this paper was specifically meant to scrutinize analysis possibilities for the first two phases of our idealized time series of events.…”

“…The evolutionary phases of convergence process (Curran and Leker, 2009;Hacklin, 2008;Lind, 2004) has lead to a discussion on the distinction between technological and industry convergence (see Nyströ m, 2008). Eventually in the process of convergence the new industry segment will either replace the former segments or complement them at their intersection (Dowling et al, 1998;Brö ring et al, 2006).…”

“…As the spillover paradigm dominates and technology from another industry diffuses, we would expect increased technological convergence between industries (Fai and von Tunzelmann, 2001). Curran and Leker (2009) base their concept of anticipating convergence upon the assumption of an idealised time series of events ( Figure 2) starting with scientific disciplines, where distinct disciplines beginning to cite each other and eventually develop further toward closer research collaboration. However, full industry convergence will only take place when technologies and markets come together (Nyströ m, 2008).…”

“…Patent analysis has been employed in the context of technology-driven convergence of electronics, computers, and telecommunication (Duysters and Hagedoorn, 1998;Gambardella and Torrisi, 1998;Bröring, 2005) as patents are often regarded as outcome indicators for organizations' R&D activities (Ernst, 1995;Fai and Tunzelmann, 2001). Curran and Leker (2009; discussed convergence indicators using patent data. Also Xing and et al (2011) tried to measure industry convergence with input-out analysis.…”
