The esophagus of a 30-hour-old girl was completely obstructed by an intraluminal mucosal web. This rare esophageal anomaly was associated with a fistula between the trachea and the distal esophagus beyond the site of obstruction. Because of the radiographic findings the correct diagnosis was suspected preoperatively. Surgical treatment by excision of the web and division of the tracheo-esophageal fistula was successful.Intral umi nal mucosal webs are not uncommon causes of con¬ genital obstruction in the gastroin¬ testinal tract of newborn infants. The duodenum, small bowel, and, less fre¬ quently, the distal colon are the most common sites of occurrence. Complete obstruction of the esophagus by such a mucosal web is a rare condition.12The purpose of this paper is to pre¬ sent a girl who had esophageal atre¬ sia, tracheo-esophageal fistula, and Fig 1.-Note hyperaeration of lungs to level of right 9th rib posteriorly, aspiration pneu¬ monia with atelectasis of right upper lobe, and (left) moderate amount of air in gastroin¬ testinal tract. In lateral view air is noted throughout entire esophagus (right).
