Segmentation of Uav-Based Images Incorporating 3d Point Cloud Information

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Numerous applications related to urban scene analysis demand automatic recognition of buildings and distinct sub-elements. For example, if LiDAR data is available, only 3D information could be leveraged for the segmentation. However, this poses several risks, for instance, the in-plane objects cannot be distinguished from their surroundings. On the other hand, if only image based segmentation is performed, the geometric features (e.g., normal orientation, planarity) are not readily available. This ren… Show more

“…Height data derived from UAS-images, in most cases with Structure-from-Motion software, has been used, for example, for landslide detection [16] and segmentation of buildings [17]. Lechner et al [18] mapped the vegetation extent of upland swamps surrounded by eucalyptus woodland in Australia.…”

“…However, the work also illustrated how the segmentation of point clouds is frequently hindered by artefacts and data gaps. In [43], an approach was developed to overcome this problem: after projecting the initial point cloud-derived 3D segments into image space, a subsequent segmentation using both geometric and radiometric features yielded more accurate and complete building segments. “…(i) Preprocessing steps that include image enhancement and filtering are often applied in case studies that use high-resolution data below 1 m [118,121,126]. This might be due to the large amount of detail in such images, which can be reduced with filtering techniques.…”
