Seismic response of nonlinear soil-structure interaction systems through the Preisach formalism: the Messina Bell Tower case study

Abstract: In this paper the seismic response of linear behaving structures resting on compliant soil is addressed through the application of the Preisach formalism to capture the soil nonlinearities. The novel application of the Preisach model of hysteresis for nonlinear soil-structure interaction problems is explored through the study of the seismic response of a real structure. Through a harmonic balance procedure, furthermore, simplified nonlinear springs and dashpots are derived in closed form for a ready and accura… Show more

“…Depending on the parameters determining such processes, seismic vibrations can either amplify or, on the contrary, reduce and minimize the possible damage to the structure. Thus, in [240,241], the Preisach operator is used to model the soil-foundation interaction in the small-to-moderate ground deformation approximation. Using the harmonic balance method, the steady-state response of the system to an external harmonic excitation is determined.…”

“…Gunaydin et al [56] assessed the structural performance of a historical masonry clock tower using both numerical and experimental processes, considering different types of SSI systems, identifying the numerical dynamic characteristics, model updating procedure, nonlinear time-history analysis, and the evaluation of seismic performance level. Cacciola et al [57] addressed the seismic response of linear behaving structures resting on compliant soil through a novel application of the Preisach model of hysteresis for nonlinear SSI problems. The method was applied to the bell tower of the Messina Cathedral in Italy.…”

“…A wide set of analyses performed on real case studies are also included in the collection. Cacciola et al (2022) address the seismic response of linearly-behaving structures resting on compliant soil, exploring the efficiency of the Preisach hysteresis formalism to model nonlinear soil-structure interaction problems. This methodology is applied to the bell tower of the Messina Cathedral in Italy, which hosts the largest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the World.…”
