Abstract:The paper presents a technique for retrofitting non-seismically reinforced concrete (RC) masonry-infilled frames with textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) jacketing. In the present study the application of TRM is examined on nearly full-scale, as-built and retrofitted, three-storey frames, subjected to in-plane cyclic loading. The results of testing a 2:3 scale, as-built frame representing typical structures with non-seismic design and detailing characteristics and of a companion frame retrofitted via TRM jacketing are presented and compared in terms of the efficiency of the proposed technique to enhance the strength and deformation characteristics of sub-standard infilled frames.

The behaviour of reinforced concrete frames with masonry wall infills is influenced a lot by the stiffness and strength difference between the frame and the infill, causing early detrimental damage to the infill or to the critical concrete columns. The paper reports the results from shake table seismic tests on a full-scale reinforced concrete (RC) frame building with modified hollow clay block (orthoblock brick) infill walls, within INMASPOL SERA Horizon 2020 project. The building received innovative resilient protection using Polyurethane Flexible Joints (PUFJs) made of polyurethane resin (PU), applied at the frame-infill interface in different schemes. Further, PUs were used for bonding of glass fibre grids to the weak masonry substrate to form Fibre Reinforced Polyurethanes (FRPUs) as an emergency repair intervention. The test results showed enhancement in the in-plane and out-of-plane infill performance under seismic excitations. The results confirmed remarkable delay of significant infill damages at very high RC frame inter-story drifts as a consequence of the use of PUFJs. Further, the PUFJ protection enabled the resilient repair of the infill even after very high inter-story drift of the structure up to 3.7%. The applied glass FRPU system efficiently protected the damaged infills against collapse under out-of-plane excitation while they restored large part of their in-plane stiffness.

The diagonal application of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer fabrics on hollow clay tile infill walls has been qualified as an efficient rehabilitation method for deficient reinforced concrete frames. However, majority of the experimental studies were conducted on 1/3-scaled RC frames and the effect of specimen scaling has not been questioned. In the current study, the results of an experimental campaign on 1/2-scaled RC frames are presented. Test specimens are grouped in two series having two different aspect ratios. In each series, there are two RC frames having hollow clay tile infill walls with/without CFRP reinforcement. The results of 1/2-scaled specimens are compared with the experimental results obtained from 1/3-scaled frames. In addition, the numerical model which were developed by the authors for 1/3-scaled frames are employed for modeling 1/2-scaled specimens and the results were assessed by comparing with the test results.
