Seismic safety of arch dams with aging effects

Abstract: Arch dams suffer time-varying external loadings and harsh environment that harm their physical properties. With the aging of such dams, damage accumulates and concrete degradation inevitably appears. In this paper, a model is proposed for simulating concrete degradation with aging because of chemo-mechanical damage. The seismic response of an arch dam with aging effects is analyzed using the proposed model. The results show that the damage caused by the aging of arch dams may result in an increase in tensile c… Show more

“…However, these researchers both ignored the effects of shear keys on the seismic responses of arch dams. In Zhang et al's subsequent studies [11][12][13], in order to represent the shear key action, linear springs between the contact surface pairs were introduced to constrain the tangential relative displacement, but the shear sliding was neglected.…”

“…As one essential component of society's infrastructure system, concrete arch dams play the roles of flood control, power Sensors 2024, 24, 3845 2 of 24 generation, irrigation, shipping, and water supply. Many of these existing arch dams are located in seismically active regions, and their seismic safety has been one of the crucial issues in the design and construction stages for researchers because of potential damage or failure that threatens public safety and economic infrastructure [4,5]. Several instances of dam damage sustained due to strong earthquakes have been recorded, including in the Hsinfengkiang concrete dam [6] in China, the Koyna gravity dam [7] in India, and the Pacoima arch dam [8] in the USA.…”

“…Relevant material deterioration models and structural safety and reliability evaluation models of arch dams are not studied and established. Wang et al introduced a concrete degradation model with aging because of chemo-mechanical damage and studied the seismic response of an arch dam with aging effects 12 . Pan et al proposed a unified approach for long-term behavior and seismic response analysis of AAR (alkali-aggregate reaction) -affected concrete dams by combining AAR kinetics, effects of creep and plastic-damage model in the finite element method 13 .…”
