Seismic Source Parameters from a New Dial-up Seismological Network in Greece

Abstract: A regional dial-up PT telemetric network of eight digital short-period seismic stations has been in full operation since the beginning of 1995 in Greece. During the first year of full operation, three destructive earthquake sequences struck different regions of central and northern Greece. The dial-up network managed to successfully record more than 85% of these seismic events including foreshocks, main shocks and aftershocks, and 45 of these events were selected in order to determine their seismic source para… Show more

“…If we take N=70 events, the sample areas will be with radii ranging between 5 and 10 km in the Greek catalog, which are of reasonable dimensions for sampling seismogenetic areas that generate large main shocks in Greece (Chouliaras and Stavrakakis, 1997).…”

“…In this figure the results of Chouliaras and Stavrakakis (1997), Margaris and Papazachos (1999), Panagiotou (2001), Polatidis (2001) and Roumelioti et al (2002), are also presented. Straight lines represent the relation of Margaris and Papazachos (1999), Roumelioti et al (2002) and the relation defined in this study.…”

“…Wherever the original results were referring to moment magnitude, M w , we used the fol lowing relation to estimate local magnitude, ML Μ* Ξ ML+0.5 (23) which is valid for the records of the Greek seismological networks (Papazachos et al, 1997b). Chouliaras and Stavrakakis (1997), (solid circles), Margaris and Papazachos (1999), (open square), Panagiotou (2001), (solid triangle), Polatidis (2001), (open triangles) and Roumelioti et al (2002), (solid diamond). Black and gray thin lines are equations proposed by Margaris and Papazachos (1999) and Roumelioti et al (2002), respectively.…”
