We used detrital zircon U/Pb geochronology and apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He thermochronology to better constrain depositional ages and sedimentation rates for the Pliocene Productive Series in Azerbaijan. U/Pb analysis of 1,379 detrital zircon grains and (U-Th-Sm)/He analysis of 57 apatite grains-from Kirmaky Valley and Yasamal Valley onshore sections, Absheron Peninsula-yielded two distinct sub-populations: "young" Neogene grains and "old" Mesozoic, Palaeozoic and Proterozoic/Archean grains. The large numbers of Neogene age grains (around 10% of all grain ages) provided a new absolute age constraint on the maximum depositional age of the Lower Productive Series of 4.0 Myr. These "young" Neogene zircon grains most likely originated from volcanic ash falls sourced from the Lesser Caucasus or Talesh Mountains. In this paper we propose a timescale scenario using the maximum depositional age of the Productive Series from detrital zircon grain U/Pb constraints. Potential consequences and limitations of using apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He dating method in estimating maximum depositional ages are also discussed. These new age constraints for the Lower Productive Series gave much faster sedimentation rates than previously estimated: 1.3 km/Myr in the South Caspian Basin margin outcrops and up to 3.9 km/Myr in the basin centre. The sedimentation rates are one of the highest in comparison to other sedimentary basins and coeval to global increase in sedimentation rates 2-4 Myr. The older group of detrital zircon grains constitutes the majority of grains in all sample sets (~80%). These older ages are inferred to reflect the provenance of the Productive Series sediment. This sediment is interpreted to have been derived from the Proterozoic and Archean crystalline basement rocks and Phanerozoic cover of the East European Craton, Proterozoic/Palaeozoic rocks of the Ural Mountains and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks of the Greater Caucasus.This sediment was likely supplied from northerly sourced drainage that emptied into the South Caspian Basin.---

The crest of the Absheron anticline in the South Caspian Basin at a few hundred meters below the present seafloor shows a subcircular depression about 8 km in diameter and 200 m deep, bounded by steep edges dipping 15°to 45°into it. The depression and the surrounding series are respectively filled and overlain by a regional mass-transport deposit (MTD) 150 m thick outside the depression and 300 m thick inside, composed mostly of extensional blocks. Geometric and stratigraphic analyses indicate that 150 m of initially deposited sediment were removed from a closed area after burial. Seismic evidence of shallow gas accumulations below the crater-like feature suggests that gas likely played a significant role in its development. The model proposed for the emplacement of the crater is that the gas-bearing cover of a shallow gas reservoir underwent exsolution when its overburden thinned during an episode of extensional slope failure. This resulted in loss of resistance to shear and evacuation of the gas-bearing sediment, likely at the shearing base of the failed mass. This evacuation feature is considered an example where the presence of gas locally governs the morphology of an MTD. The interpreted process shows a positive feedback between slope failure and loss of strength at the base of the resulting MTD.

Understanding the nature of mud volcanism, mechanisms of formation, types of eruptions and their relationship to the hydrocarbon systems provides important information about subsurface conditions and geological processes within the South Caspian Basin. A 2D seismic grid in southeastern offshore Azerbaijan is defines the areal distribution of mud volcanoes and allows for their classification based on characteristic seismic features. As a result, a detailed database for each mud volcano is constructed. A high concentration of mud volcanoes is observed at the southern part of the study area. Mud volcanoes with low relief (several tens of meters) are mainly concentrated in the northeast. Those with large vertical relief (greater than 200 m) are clustered in the southwest part of the basin. Mud volcano development in the South Caspian Basin is generally linked to faults, which in some instances are detached at great depth. By using interpreted seismic surfaces it is possible to determine relative time of mud flows from the mud volcanoes. Timing of mudflows gives valuable information with respect to possible mechanisms of mud volcanism within the South Caspian Basin. Previous studies of the onshore mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan and the results from current work conclude that mud volcano formation within the South Caspian Basin is mainly controlled by tectonic forces and overpressured sediments. Mud volcano activity is not always related to the Maykop organic reach shale succession. It can occur at shallow depths by pressure breakthrough from any stratigraphic zone. Introduction Mud Volcanoes are natural phenomenon that has attracted attention for a long time. They have similarities in appearance to magmatic volcanoes, but have greatly different origins. Mud volcanoes are key features that reflect regional geological processes in the Caspian Sea. There are many global studies of mud volcanoes that reveal aspects of their origin, mechanism of formation and paleo-activity3,8,10,13. Mud volcanoes are mainly concentrated in the systems of accretionary prisms where compressional settings and active fluid dynamics prevail among all other forces. It is an important source of information about subsurface sediments and conditions. More than 30% of all mud volcanoes in the world are concentrated in the South Caspian Basin. Favorable tectonic conditions, depositional settings and thermobaric conditions caused generation of significantly huge mud volcanoes in this region8. In places, they are several kilometers across and reach several hundred meters in height. As a source of hydrocarbon gases they may provide sufficient supply of gases to the hydrosphere and atmosphere for the greenhouse effect and climatic change10,13. They have a relationship with oil and gas fields8. and thus may provide evidence of petroleum potential. They also may impact drilling operations, rig installations and pipeline routings by their violent eruptions and instability of the surrounding gas saturated sediments 13. This paper provides a description of offshore mud volcanoes in the area of South-east offshore Azerbaijan (Figure 1).
