Derince town is one of the most densely industrialized (oil refineries, ports, etc.) and populated urban areas which is located in one of the highest seismically active regions in Turkey. The area was damaged by a severe earthquake on 17 August 1999 in Kocaeli (Mw = 7.4). The geotechnical properties of layers play the most important role in the formation of damage. One of the weakness indicators for the soil structure in a region is the ground vulnerability indices (Kg). The reduction of damage from earthquakes is related to the knowledge of these ground properties. Therefore, the microtremor horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method was applied to single site measurements at 43 stations over an area of 40 km2 to evaluate local site effects in terms of ground vulnerability indices (Kg), fundamental frequency and amplification factor. Structural damage occurring during the August 17, 1999 Kocaeli (Mw=7.4) earthquake is compared with the estimated ground vulnerability indices. The results indicate that the Kg values are in good agreement with damage distribution. Large Kg values indicate weak points in the study area. According to results, the areas with Kg values greater than 14 seem to be the most vulnerable locations in the study. The Kg and soil types overwhelmingly comply with each other very well. Poor ground conditions are seen in areas with high vulnerability. Ground conditions should be taken into account during the planning and design of urban areas. The results obtained by considering ground conditions can be used as a quick method to identify risky areas.

ÖzJeofizik yöntemlerden biri olan mikrotremor yönteminin mühendislik uygulamalarındaki kullanımı gün geçtikçe artmaktadır. Mikrotremor verilerinin spektral oranından elde edilen zemin hâkim titreşim periyodu ve büyütme değerleri kullanılarak sismik zayıflık indisi (Kg) hesaplanabilmektedir. Kg zemin dinamik özelliklerine bağlı olarak değişen bir parametredir. Bu parametre ile bir alanın kuvvetli yer hareketine karşı dayanıklı veya zayıf kalma durumunun noktasal olarak değerlendirilmesi yapılabilmektedir. Çalışmada, Van yerleşim alanında 220 noktada mikrotremor ölçümleri alınarak yerleşim alanı için zayıflık indisi haritası oluşturulmuştur. Özellikle Van Gölüne yakın kesimlerde ve yapı yoğunluğunun olduğu merkez bölgelerde tehlike düzeyinin ve sismik zayıflık indisinin yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. 2011 Van depremi (Mw=7.1) sonrası bölgede incelenen binaların hasar durumları oluşturulan zayıflık indisi haritasına yerleştirilmiş ve yapıların hasar durumlarının zayıflık indeksi ile ilişkili olabileceği gözlenmiştir. Çalışma alanında özellikle Van Gölüne yakın kesimlerinde hem gevşek-suya doygun zemin yapısı hem yapı kalitesi hem de yüksek Kg değerlerinin elde edilmesi olası büyük bir depremde ortaya çıkabilecek yüksek ivme değerlerinde makaslama deformasyonu seviyesine bağlı zemin davranışının hasara neden olan plastik davranış ve göçme davranışına dönüşebileceği tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular yapısal hasarlarda yapı kalitesinin yanı sıra zemin tabakalarının dinamik davranışlarının ve yerel zemin koşullarının da etkili olduğunu bir kez daha ortaya koymuştur.

Seismic bearing capacity of strip footings in cohesive soil slopes considering various embedded depths is investigated in this study. Novel solutions using pseudo-static method and finite element limit analysis (FELA) with upper bound (LB) and lower bound (LB) theorems are presented. The influences of footing depth, slope angle, slope height, undrained shear strength and pseudo-static acceleration on bearing capacity and failure mechanisms are examined using dimensionless parameters. With the comprehensive numerical results, the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) model is then utilized to simulate the sensitivity of all dimensionless input parameters (i.e., the normalized depth of footing D/B, the normalized slope height H/B, the normalized distance from top slope to edge of the footing L/B, slope angle β, the strength ratio cu/γB, and the pseudo-static acceleration factor, kh). The degree of influence of each design parameter is produced, and an empirical equation for the dimensionless output parameter (i.e., bearing capacity factor Nc) is proposed. The study results are accessible in the design charts, tables, empirical equation for design practitioners.
