Seismicity and active faulting of the Kanab‐Fredonia area of the southern Colorado Plateau

Abstract: Detailed study of the historic seismicity of the Kanab‐Fredonia area adds information to the location of the Colorado Plateau tectonic boundary in this area and to the nature of contemporary seismicity and faulting on this part of the Colorado Plateau. Historic seismicity over 45 years (1959–2004) defines a band of activity which extends through Fredonia, Arizona and into southern Utah around Kanab. The area is dominated by north trending high‐angle normal faults. The spatial distribution of epicenters consist… Show more

“…[8] Sparse focal mechanisms and other stress indicators along the CP-southern BR transition zone indicate NE-SW oriented extension [e.g., Zoback and Zoback, 1980;Brumbaugh, 2008], consistent with focal mechanisms of small earthquakes within the plateau [e.g., Wong and Humphrey, 1989]. Menges and Pearthree [1989] infer a belt of longwavelength uplift across the transition zone based on regional topographic anomalies and dissection patterns.…”

“…One of the largest recorded events on the Colorado Plateau was the Kanab-Fredonia earthquake in 1957, which was a magnitude 5.7. Historically no events have resulted in surface ruptures, but earthquake activity suggests that the Sevier fault is still experiencing extensional strain (Brumbaugh, 2008).…”
