Seismotectonics of the Chersky Seismic Belt, eastern Sakha Republic (Yakutia) and Magadan District, Russia

Abstract: Abstract. The Chersky seismic belt represents a zone of deformation between the North American and Eurasian plates in northeast Russia. The belt extends from the Laptev Sea into the Chersky Range where it splits into two branches. One branch extends to Kamchatka and the Aleutian-Kurile Junction, while the other branch extends south towards Sakhalin Island. Focal mechanisms indicate a change from extension to transpression in the northern Verkhoyansk Range and generally left-lateral transpression in the Chersky… Show more

“…The lake's shift off-centre towards the east might be another result of this block motion during the local orogenesis. Today's seismicity map indicates that earthquakes with magnitudes up to 4 shake the area (Fujita et al, 2009). .…”

“…Prior to the 1950s the network of seismograph stations was poor in northeastern Russia, and hence historical seismic data cover only the last ca. 60 yr (Fujita et al, 2009). Between 1960 and 2010 two earthquakes were recorded at distances to the lake of 99 and 66 km, respectively (International Seismological Centre, 2011).…”
