Selected metabolic biochemical and enzyme activities associated with Besnoitia besnoiti infection in dairy cattle

Abstract: The main aim of the study was to explore, compare, and identify whether there is an association between Besnoitia besnoiti seropositivity in apparently healthy dairy cows with some biochemical parameters, enzyme activities, and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA). A total of 98 dairy cows were included in the study, of which there was 50 seropositive and 48 seronegative cows. Analysis of serum antibodies against B. besnoiti antibodies was performed using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Student's ind… Show more

“…The search for serum biomarkers can help with early diagnosis and elucidate the clinical and molecular pathogenesis puzzle of bovine besnoitiosis [ 6 , 22 ]. Previous attempts have focused on haematological and biochemical parameters [ 23 , 24 ]. However, changes in a few biomarkers were observed when animals with well-defined acute, subacute and chronic besnoitiosis were studied compared to another study where only seropositive cattle were compared with seronegative cattle [ 23 , 24 ].…”

Therefore, a well-characterised panel of clinically affected animals is more convenient in the search for biomarkers, and acute-phase response markers could be of value in bovine besnoitiosis, where a systemic inflammatory reaction is especially intense during the acute phase and focused at the testicular level during acute and chronic besnoitiosis.…”

“…Plasma samples were stored at −80°C until analysis. The following four metabolic indicators of SK were tested in strict accordance with the kit instructions: i) The plasma GLU concentration (Changchun Huili Biotech Co. Ltd) was measured by means of the glucose oxidase-peroxidase method (Kong et al, 2015); ii) NEFA (Nanjing Jiancheng Bioengineering Institute, Nanjing, China) was measured by the acyl-CoA synthetase/oxidase enzyme colorimetric method (Xia et al, 2009) with a commercially available kit; iii) The plasma BHBA (Bio Vision Incorporated, Milpitas CA) concentration was measured by using the enzyme colorimetric method (Alshehabat et al, 2016); and iv) GH (bovine GH kit, TWp024402j, TWreagent, Shanghai, China) was determined by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Chen et al, 2018). For the GH and GLU biochemical indices, the intra-and inter-assay coefficient of variation (CV%) was <5%.…”

“…These parasites have been reported to cause alopecia, hyperkeratosis and tissue cysts in mucous membranes of the host animals (Gutiérrez-Expósito et al, 2017). Bovine besnoitiosis was recognized as an extremely important disease in several countries in Asia, Africa, Middle East, South America and Europe due to the major economic losses in the cattle industry in terms of low milk production, poor health, male sterility and death (Gazzonis et al, 2014;Waap et al, 2014;García-Lunar et al, 2015;Gollnick et al, 2015;Alshehabat et al, 2016;Verma et al, 2017).…”
