Criticism tends to be a face-threatening speech act that can endanger social relationships if not managed using appropriate strategies, especially in the intercultural context. This study aims to compare and contrast the politeness of criticism speech acts used in Japanese and Minangkabau languages as depicted in film series. The data on criticism speech acts in this study were collected from eleven Japanese film series with a total duration of 538 minutes and eight Minangkabau films with a total duration of 535 minutes. The collected data were formed into a set of data cards, classified based on the criticism speech acts strategies by Nguyen (2005), and analyzed based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory. The data classification in Japanese and Minangkabau was validated through the expert judgment process. The findings indicated that the Japanese and Minangkabau languages employed the same set of criticism speech act strategies but have different tendencies. In Japanese, speakers tend to use indirect strategies as their main criticism speech act strategy by ‘asking/presupposing,’ ‘correction,’ and ‘advice for change.’ Meanwhile, in Minangkabau, speakers tend to use direct strategies by using ‘negative evaluation,’ ‘expression of contradiction,’ and ‘disagreement’ strategies. Regarding the politeness strategy, off-record politeness strategies are more dominantly used among Japanese speakers. In contrast, Minangkabau speakers use bald on-record politeness strategies in criticism speech acts, reflecting their communication culture. The findings of this study provide a deeper understanding of criticism speech act and politeness strategies. The study is expected to contribute to the area of research on intercultural communication and Sociolinguistics.

The study of prostitution in Indonesia is dominated by economic, legal, social and health studies. Psychological studies related to the dynamics of intimacy are still limited and mostly conducted in the context of sexual and reproductive health, namely the use of condoms. Intimacy in this article refers to closeness, attachment, and comfort that are psychologically important for prostitutes to manage in order to maintain a personal relationship with clients. The purpose of this article is to describe intimacy in the world of prostitution. Through literature studies and by limiting the study on female prostitutes, this article discusses the definition of prostitution, its history in Indonesia, the role of intimacy in prostitution, the boundaries of intimate relationships, and the link between intimacy and condom use. Two discourses, intimacy as part of sexual relations and intimacy as a form of embeddedness in an economic context are used to understand the boundary line between intimacy as a commercial relationship and intimacy as a non-commercial relationship. This article is expected to contribute to the psychological, legal, and health aspects of prostitution.

AbstrakLatar belakang: Fungsi dan keintiman keluarga merupakan faktor protektif dari penyakit fisik, mental, dan menentukan kualitas hidup lansia. Sedikit kajian yang mengeksplorasi faktor determinan yang berpengaruh terhadap kedua faktor tersebut. Tujuan: untuk mengetahui faktor determinan fungsi dan keintiman keluarga pada populasi keluarga Muslim Indonesia. Metode: Sebanyak 106 subyek berkeluarga 40 tahun ke atas berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Faktor yang diuji meliputi usia, tingkat pendidikan, jenis kelamin, pendapatan, IMT, RLPP, tekanan darah, tingkat depresi, anxietas stres, jumlah rakaat sholat, fungsi keluarga dan keintiman keluarga. Hasil: Faktor usia berkorelasi dengan keintiman seksual (r = -0,269; p=0,005), intelektual (r=0,332; p=0,001), rekreasional (r= -0,303; p=0,002); tekanan diastolik dengan keintiman seksual (r=0,227; p=0,019), jumlah rakaat sholat dengan keintiman emosional (r=0,204; p=0,036). Faktor yang berkorelasi dengan fungsi keluarga meliputi tingkat depresi, anxietas dan stress, secara berurutan nilai [r;p]: r= -0,224; p=0,021, r= -0,285; p=0,003, r= -0,236; p=0,015; IMT (r= -0,209; p=0,032);. Kesimpulan: faktor determinan keintiman keluarga meliputi usia (korelasi negatif), tekanan diastolic, jumlah rakaat sholat (korelasi positif); faktor determinan fungsi keluarga meliputi IMT dan status mental (korelasi negatif).Kata kunci : Faktor determinan, fungsi keluarga, keintiman keluarga.
