Selection Index in the Study of Adaptability and Stability in Maize

Abstract: This paper proposes an alternative method for evaluating the stability and adaptability of maize hybrids using a genotype-ideotype distance index (GIDI) for selection. Data from seven variables were used, obtained through evaluation of 25 maize hybrids at six sites in southern Brazil. The GIDI was estimated by means of the generalized Mahalanobis distance for each plot of the test. We then proceeded to GGE biplot analysis in order to compare the predictive accuracy of the GGE models and the grouping of environ… Show more

“…Generally, all genotypes were located far from the biplot origin and contribute to the G×E interaction for yield. AMMI analysis is widely used for the evaluation of maize hybrids yield in multienvironment field trials [20,24,25,[41][42][43], and grain yield of wheat varieties [22,36,[44][45][46], seed yield of oilseed rape [23], nutritional composition of sweet potato [38], yield of sugarcane [47] and yield of chickpea [48]. As for the protein content, according to the ANOVA, genotypes (G), environments (E) and their interaction (GxE) gave statistically significant values (p < 0.001).…”

“…That is the reason Fasoulas [4] proposed the ratio between mean and standard deviation for stability estimations and, later, Fasoula [5] used the same ratio in its squared form as a better stability criterion for plant breeders. The criteria of stability across environments are of great consideration for maize breeders and breeders of other plants, while reliable criteria must undergo extensive research because of their relationship to genetic background [6]. Especially, Genotype × Environment (G × E) interactions are of great consideration for maize breeders, because they affect successful entrance of commercial hybrids in the market.…”
