Selective and Sensitive Room Temperature Detection of Ammonia by PPy-Ag Nanocomposite

Abstract: This paper describes synthesis of polypyrrole-silver nanocomposite (PPy-Ag-NC) via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole, based on colloidal suspension of silver nanoparticles. The structure analysis of synthesized nanocomposite was done by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs showed spherical Ag nanoparticles of about 38-60 nm were embedded in the PPy matrix. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) photo graphs revealed formation of unifo… Show more

“…Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia can lead to severe consequences, including blindness, chronic lung damage, or even death. [74][75][76][77] According to the US Department of Health and Human Services Agency, when ammonia comes into contact with eyes and skin fluids, it forms ammonium hydroxide, a highly ionized weak base that can lead to tissue necrosis, saponification of cell membrane lipids (resulting in cell disruption and death), and the extraction of water from cells, causing inflammatory responses that may damage surrounding tissues. [77] Due to the acute toxicity of ammonia, the development of gas sensor devices for the early detection and monitoring of ammonia gas is crucial for a wide range of applications.…”

“…It finds widespread use in various applications, primarily in the manufacturing of nitrogenous fertilizers like urea, ammonium sulphate, and ammonium nitrate for agricultural purposes. [74][75][76][77] Additionally, ammonia is employed in water purification, explosives production, the textile and pharmaceutical industries, household cleaning, refrigerants, metal extraction, and the manufacturing of plastics and pulp. [73] Ammonia is a corrosive, poisonous, and highly toxic volatile chemical.…”
