Selective binding of docosahexaenoic acid ethyl ester to a silver‐ion‐loaded porous hollow‐fiber membrane

Abstract: Silver ions were loaded at a density of 1 mmol/g onto a sulfonic acid group-containing porous hollow-fiber membrane prepared by radiation-induced graft polymerization of an epoxy group-containing monomer with subsequent modification by reaction with sodium sulfite. The permeability (i.e., permeation flow rate per inside surface area of the hollow fiber) of 4.6% wt/vol bonito oil ethyl ester solution in water/ethanol (7.5:92.5, vol/vol) was 1.7 m/h at a permeation pressure of 0.1 MPa. Breakthrough curves (i.e.,… Show more

“…Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to be important for the maintenance of good health and prevention of a range of human diseases and disorders (Shibasaki et al 1999;Uauy and Valenzuela 2000;Wanasundara and Shahidi 1998). Tilapia oil, made from the tilapia fish, could be a useful dietary supplement as it contains considerable amounts of EPA and DHA.…”

“…Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid, C20:5n3) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, C22:6n3), have been shown to be important for maintenance of good health and prevention of a range of human diseases and disorders (Shibasaki et al, 1999;Uauy & Valenzuela, 2000;Wanasundara & Shahidi, 1998). Tuna oil contains considerable amounts of omega-3 PUFAs (Klinkesorn, H-Kittikun, Chinachoti, & Sophanodora, 2004) and may be a useful dietary supplement.…”

“…Long-chain ω-3 fatty acids are considered beneficial for growth and development throughout the life cycle and may play an important role in the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease (arteriosclerosis), hypertension, arthritis, and immune respone disorders (2)(3)(4). Moreover, DHA is important in the development of the central nervous system and eyes of infants and thus is considered to be a promising nutrient because of its beneficial effects on the retina and brain (5) Due to their beneficial health properties, ω-3 fatty acids have great potential as functional food ingredients.…”
