Selective Coupling Enhances Harmonic Generation of Whispering-Gallery Modes

Abstract: We demonstrate second harmonic generation (SHG) in an x-cut congruent lithium niobate (LN) whispering gallery mode resonator. We first show theoretically that independent control of the coupling of the pump and signal modes is optimal for high conversion rates. A scheme based on our earlier work in Ref.[1] is then implemented experimentally to verify this. Thereby we are able to improve on the efficiency of SHG by more than an order of magnitude by selectively out-coupling using a LN prism, utilizing the biref… Show more

“…Alternatively, our proposal can be implemented in an optical system such as a whispering-gallerymode (WGM) microresonator coupled to a mechanical breathing mode [59][60][61][62][63][64][65]. The WGM microresonator made from nonlinear crystals exhibits strong optical nonlinearities [66][67][68], which is the essential requirement for squeezing. The squeezed-vacuum reservoir for the optical cavity can be prepared by pumping a nonlinear medium, e.g., periodically-poled KTiOPO 4 (PPKTP) crystal, in a cavity [69][70][71][72].…”

“…Notably, the resulting tensor shows that different SHG processes with ∆𝑚 = ±1 are expected either with copolarized (TE) fundamental and SH fields 22 (elements 𝑎) or with cross polarized modes (element 𝑐). 19,33,34 As a conclusion, we used the TSAM description of light in planar WGM resonators to explicit the Berry phase experienced by the spin up and spin down components of the field during their revolution into the resonator. This Berry phase is found to be at the origin of the additional quanta appearing in the quasi-phase matching conditions of nonlinear 2 nd order processes in these devices for many different materials.…”
