Self‐Assembled Carbon Dot Nanosphere: A Robust, Near‐Infrared Light‐Responsive, and Vein Injectable Photosensitizer

Abstract: Self-assembly "activated" carbon dot photosensitizer: a robust, NIR-light responsive, and vein injectable carbon dot nanosphere (CDNS) photosensitizer with O quantum yield of 0.45 under 671 nm laser irradiation has been developed through self-assembly using individual CD as building units. This study develops the biomedical applications of CD, highlights the self-assembly for designing well-defined CD-based photosensitizers, and promotes future explorations of this CDNS photosensitizer in nanomedical and clini… Show more

“…Making the particles with~100 nm in size and tuning the surface charge will enhance the EPR time in the body. Jia et al [141] prepared the CDs nanosphere with a size of 100 nm through the ionic self-assembly with positive charge CD and negative charge sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Further, the CDs spheres were passivated with HOOC-PEG-NH 2 to reduce in vivo cytotoxicity and increase blood circulation time.…”

“…120 To address these limitations, our group prepared an NIR-light-responsive CD nanosphere (CDNS) via self-assembly by using individual CDs as building units. 121 In comparison with individual CDs, the assembled CDNSs exhibit a red-shifted absorption of B50 nm, a broader absorption band from 400 nm to 800 nm, and a stronger NIR emission peak at 730 nm. The positively charged surface of CD changes into the negatively charged surface of CDNSs.…”

“…However, in the case of semiorganic nanoparticles such as CDs, there are very few reports on self‐assembly. Also, the reported literature does not demonstrate long‐range ordering and subsequent 2D structure formation attributes . Moreover, the integration of such 2D carbon nanostructures into optoelectronic devices is quite challenging.…”
