Chromophores that exhibit aggregation‐induced emission (i.e., aggregation‐induced emission luminogens [AIEgens]) emit intense fluorescence in their aggregated states, but show negligible emission as discrete molecular species in solution due to the changes in restriction and freedom of intramolecular motions. As solvent‐swollen quasi‐solids with both a compact phase and a free space, gels enable manipulation of intramolecular motions. Thus, AIE‐active gels have attracted significant interest owing to their various distinctive properties and promising application potential. Herein, a comprehensive overview of AIE‐active gels is provided. The fabrication strategies employed are detailed, and the applications of AIEgens are summarized. In addition, the gel functions arising from the AIE moieties are revealed, along with their structure–property relationships. Furthermore, the applications of AIE‐active gels in diverse areas are illustrated. Finally, ongoing challenges and potential means to address them are discussed, along with future perspectives on AIE‐active gels, with the overall aim of inspiring research on novel materials and ideas.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a highly temperature-dependent process and can be used in optical thermometry. TADF-based optical thermometers reported so far show fairly high-temperature sensitivity but have poor brightness and significant oxygen cross-talk. A new class of TADF emitters, Zn(II) Schiff base complexes, possess excellent brightness and high temperature sensitivity of the decay time at ambient temperature (4.1%/K change of TADF lifetime at 25 °C), enabling a resolution better than 0.03 °C. Oxygen cross-sensitivity is eliminated by covering the sensing layer (luminophore in polystyrene) with an off-stoichiometry thiol–ene polymer as an oxygen-consuming layer, and a poly(vinylidene chloride-co-acrylonitrile) layer as an oxygen barrier. The material is stable after more than 2 months of storage at ambient air, which enables long-term temperature monitoring.

Novel luminescent organogelators based on nucleosides functionalized with carbazole (UC8, UC12 and UC16) were designed and synthesized. Their gelation ability was tested and it was found that both UC12 and UC16 could form stable organogels in toluene/petroleum ether. The UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence emission, and IR spectral changes during the gelation of UC12 proved that the self‐assembly was driven by hydrogen‐bonding. The morphology of the xerogel UC16 obtained from toluene/petroleum ether (v/v 1:1) displayed tough rod‐like microstructures, and 3D networks formed from numerous nanofibers were observed for the xerogel UC16 obtained from toluene/petroleum ether (v/v 2:1). It was interesting that the obtained organogels emitting blue light could be destroyed by the addition of F–, accompanied by a reduction of the emission intensity. Therefore, these organogels could be used as sensory materials to recognize F–.
