Self-Assembling of Tetradecylammonium Chain on Swelling High Charge Micas (Na-Mica-3 and Na-Mica-2): Effect of Alkylammonium Concentration and Mica Layer Charge

Abstract: A family of tetradecylammonium micas is synthesized using synthetic swelling micas with high layer charge (Na n Si 8−n Al n Mg 6 F 4 O 20 •XH 2 O, where n = 2 and 3) exchanged with tetradecylammonium cations. The molecular arrangement of the surfactant is elucidated on the basis of XRD patterns and DTA.The ordering conformation of the surfactant molecules into the interlayer space of micas is investigated by IR/FT, 13 C, 27 Al, and 29 Si MAS NMR. The structural arrangement of the tetradecylammonium cation in t… Show more

“…The primary amine cations in the interlayer were closely packed in a paraffin-type bilayer with double all-trans conformation due to the high density of the organic matter. 17,18,19 We present in this work a deep insight into the intercalation properties of a swellable high charge mica Na-4-Mica, with a primary [RNH 3 ] + , tertiary [RNH(CH 3 ) 2 ] + , and quaternary amine cations [RN(CH 3 ) 3 ] + , with alkyl length R = 16. The length of the surfactant cations has been carefully chosen to assure that Van der Waals interactions between alkyl chains are strong enough to allow a quantitative uptake of the surfactant cations.…”

“…Next, nanoclay is added, and the product is self-assembled to stabilize and disperse gold NPs (AuNPs). 12 After clay exfoliation, the clay surface becomes negatively charged for adsorption of positively charged sodium ions. Furthermore, after exfoliation and dispersion, the surface areas of nanomica platelets (NMPs) are increased (300 nm × 300 nm × 1 nm).…”

“…Thus, using amphiphilic polymer dispersants, hydrophilic clay can be modified into hydrophobic organic clay. Next, nanoclay is added, and the product is self-assembled to stabilize and disperse gold NPs (AuNPs) . After clay exfoliation, the clay surface becomes negatively charged for adsorption of positively charged sodium ions.…”

“…The common materials used for uranium absorption have been obtained by modifying uranium affinity groups on the surface of relatively hard particles [23,24]. This costly step-by-step synthesis process leads to the masking of internal sites, which reduces the adsorption efficiency and, as such, the small particles are difficult to gather, which is also a common problem of uranium-recycling [25]. Furthermore, most adsorbents are composed of an organic skeleton, which greatly reduces their water compatibility and limits their adsorption efficiency and selectivity in aqueous solution [26].…”
