“…Clinical observations indicate that not all youths who report symptoms of depressive disorder engage in intentional self-harm behaviors. Similar subgroups are formed commonly in the suicide literature (see, e.g., Gutierrez et al, 2001;Marciano & Kazdin, 1994).…”

“…For example, Pfeffer et al (1979) reported significant differences on an interview measure of hopelessness between sui~cidal and nonsui~pidal childrczn. Likewise, Marciano and Kazdin (1994) noted that preadolescents classified as suicidal based on a semistructured interview with children were significantly more hopeless than nonsuiicidal preadolescents as measured by a child report questionnaire measure of hopelessness. Indeed, Asarnow anid her colleagues &ported significant correlations between suicidal behiavior and a child report questionnaire measure of hopelessness (PLsarnow et al, 1987;Asarnow & Guthrie, 1989).…”

“…Neither Kazdin et al (1983) nor Asarnow et al (1987) were able to demonstrate relations between classifying children as attempters versus ideators versus nonsuicidal and a child report questionnaire measure of self-esteem. However, Marciano and Kazdin (1994) reported that suicidal children scored signilkcantly lower on a child report questionnaire measure of selfesteem than their nonsuicidal counterparts. Moreover, in a discriminant analysis, these investigators found that self-esteem was a better predictor of suicidal behavior than hopelessness or diagnlostic category.…”
