Self Healing Cutaneous Mucinosis

Abstract: Self-healing juvenile cutaneous mucinosis is a new entity distinct from previously described forms of cutaneous mucinosis. We present a new case in a 26-year-old female patient who began abruptly with a papular eruption, involving the scalp, face, neck and trunk, accompanied by periarticular papules on the hands and arthralgias. No associated disease could be detected and the lesions resolved spontaneously within a few months. This is the first case described in an adult patient.

“…Unlike the distinct presentation of SHJCM, these patients had heterogenous clinical presentations that ranged from a single isolated hand lesion, to a patient with a distinct cutaneous eruption with arthralgias similar to SHJCM, to a patient with lichen myxedematosus with polyclonal gammopathy. 17,[21][22][23] We believe the unique generalized clinical presentation and presence of both papular and characteristic deep-seated nodular lesions warrants that SHJCM be categorized as an entity distinct from other the other localized/papular mucinoses.…”

“…So far there have been reports that nodules occur in periarticular regions [1, 2, 4]but not on the long axis of the extremities. Recently a case of SHJCM associated with a neoplasm has been reported [4], and a case described in an adult patient has been published [8]. There are both clinical and histochemical differences between our case and the previously reported ones, showing the multifaceted feature of the disorder (table 1).…”

“…Despite various histological features, the diagnosis of SHJCM is mainly based on clinical presentations like sudden onset of papules and nodules located primarily on the face and peri -articular areas, which may disappear without any special treatment. As a rule, SHJCM may be differentiated from other forms of cutaneous mucinosis by some specific characteristics, including its early age of onset, the lack of systemic symptoms, spontaneous resolution, and the absence of dysglobulinemia or thyroid dysfunction (9). Until now, the nature of the disorder has remained unclear.…”

“…It was described by Colomb (2) and Bonerandi (3) and in the 2 following decades, many other similar cases have been reported (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12). Cutaneous mucinosis has various clinical types, such as SHJCM and congenital forms (13).…”
