Self-Injection Locking of a Gain-Switched Laser Diode

Abstract: We experimentally observed self-injection locking regime of the gain-switched laser to high-Q optical microresonator. We revealed that comb generated by the gain-switched laser experiences a dramatic reduce of comb teeth linewidths in this regime. We demonstrated the Lorentzian linewidth of the comb teeth of sub-kHz scale as narrow as for non-switched self-injection locked laser. Such setup allows generation of high-contrast electrically-tunable optical frequency combs with tunable comb line spacing in a wide … Show more

“…Such effect of beatnote spectral purification provides possibility to obtain ultrastable radio-frequency signal. It should be noted that application of a Fabry-Pérot laser diode expands the gain-switched comb generation to a more powerful laser sources up to dozens milliwatts, comparing to previously demonstrated with distributed feedback (DFB) lasers 42 .…”

“…Supply current applies through a bias tee element and leads to a formation of the optical frequency comb. Its linespacing is equal to the modulation frequency and can be varied continuously 42 , which can be used as a frequency scan for example for spectroscopy. We apply 1.5 V amplitude with different frequencies from 10 MHz to several GHz and achieved a gain switching with a Fabry-Pérot laser diode.…”

“…Microresonator-based stabilization allows laser operation in the gain-switching (GS) regime 39 , 40 . Gain switching via modulation of a laser diode operating current through a bias tee circuit allows for the generation of a frequency comb with line spacing defined by the microwave modulation frequency 41 43 .…”

“…Optical microresonators with whispering gallery modes (WGM) are budding for the mid-IR photonic devices development for both fundamental and applied problems. 1,2 The advantage of combination of the small mode volume and high quality factor allows to produce successfully compact high-performance devices for a wide range of applications and devices such as for stabilization of the laser and narrow linewidth lasers, [3][4][5][6] chemical and biological sensing, [7][8][9] nonlinear optical devices, [10][11][12] spectroscopy. 13 The Er:ZBLAN microspheres used in the previously mentioned study were made by the method described in.…”
