Self-regulation and learning from failures: Probabilistic reversal learning task reveals lower flexibility persisting after punishment in procrastinators.

Abstract: Procrastination is a self-regulation failure in which people irrationally delay intended actions which leads to lower performance, satisfaction from achievements, and quality of life. Trait procrastination is estimated to affect 15% to 20% of the total population, and previous studies have shown procrastination to be related to impulsivity, emotion dysregulation, and executive dysfunctions, making it a good nonclinical example of a self-regulation disorder. Our previous fMRI results revealed impaired error pro… Show more

“…As previously shown, financial or social motivators can have a different impact on cognitive performance and brain activity among HP, as compared to individuals with a lower tendency to delay tasks (e.g. Michałowski et al, 2017;Przetacka et al, 2021). Therefore, HP students might be more sensitive to personally meaningful distractions than non-procrastinators.…”

“…Se ha sugerido específicamente que el deterioro del aprendizaje por errores y castigos puede ser un mecanismo importante que subyace a la deficiente autorregulación en trastornos variados. (8,9) Las funciones cognitivas que residen en la corteza cerebral, tienen una influencia limitada sobre las áreas subcorticales. Aunque no sea en sí misma una condición clínica, procrastinar ocurre muy a menudo en los estados morbosos de ansiedad y depresivos.…”

“…There is evidence shown that individual with reduced inhibitory control in the context of punishment may have the impaired learning from errors and punishment, which further result in deficient self-regulation and causing individual engage in maladaptive behaviors (substance abuse, procrastination, etc.) repeatedly ( Wypych & Potenza, 2021 ; Przetacka et al, 2022 ). Another possible explanation for the observed effects is negative reinforcement.…”
