Semanta – Semantic Email Made Easy

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper we present Semanta -a fully-implemented system supporting Semantic Email Processes, integrated into the existing technical landscape and using existing email transport technology. By applying Speech Act Theory, knowledge about these processes can be made explicit, enabling machines to support email users with correctly interpreting, handling and keeping track of email messages, visualizing email threads and workflows, and extracting tasks and appointments from email messages. Whereas co… Show more

“…Details as to Semanta's final architecture will be presented in Section 4 whereas in Section 5 we will describe how the latest version of Semanta utilises information extraction techniques to elicit workflow knowledge. A number of workflow supportive features have previously been demonstrated in (Scerri, 2009). In Section 6 we provide a brief overview of these features before presenting the novel workflow-based email visualisation technique which has now been incorporated in this tool.…”

“…Semi-automatic e-mail filing for personal information management (PIM) using a semantic desktop approach was considered in [8]. Scerri et al developed an MS plugin, Semanta [9], which can assist users in extracting one or several speech acts from e-mail. Semanta helps to fill patterns for speech acts, e.g., action, object, and target, depending on the activity type.…”

“…It can be assumed that users will then limit repetitive and error-prone interactions, and make better decisions by reducing their cognitive load. Our approach differs from other systems such as Semanta [8] or any other external visualization [9] in the way that respectively no automatic processing is done on the data, and we remain within the current email client interface. We only optimize some currently underused screen real estate.…”
