Semantics for an agent communication language

Abstract: We address the issues of semantics and conversations for agent communication languages and the Knowledge Query Manipulation Language (KQML) in particular. Based on ideas from speech act theory, we present a semantic description for KQML that associates \cognitive" states of the agent with the use of the language's primitives (performatives). We have used this approach to describe the semantics for the whole set of reserved KQML performatives. Building on the semantics, we devise the conversation policies, i.e.… Show more

“…Following the [15] semantics of speech acts, three performative conditions for agent communication of goals were established for the Pre-assessment System in preconditions, postconditions and completion. The completion Condition becomes the transition state [3] in which the agents of the Pre-assessment System can establish the eventual goal that can only be achieved at some time after any current conversation has finished.…”

“…KQML is a language for programs which use to communicate attitudes about information, such as querying, stating, believing, requiring, achieving, subscribing, and offering. KQML is indifferent to the format of the information itself, thus KQML expressions will often contain sub-expressions in other socalled content languages [10].…”

“…They are designed to facilitate collaboration process by providing agent communication mechanism since communication play a fundamental role in collaboration [30]. Formal semantics for KQML have been proposed to associate a meaning to a message [31]. The semantics are captured by feasibility conditions and a rational effect.…”
