Concentrations of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAM) in aqueous solution and fermentation liquids were quantitatively determined by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and verified by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The Ag nanoparticle/silicon nanowire array substrate was fabricated and employed as an active SERS substrate to indirectly measure the SAM concentration. The linear relationship between the integrated intensity of peak centered at ~2920 cm−1 in SERS spectra and the SAM concentration was established, and the limit of detections of SAM concentrations was analyzed to be ~0.1 g/L. The concentration of SAM in real solution could be predicted by the linear relationship and verified by the HPLC detection method. The relative deviations (δ) of the predicted SAM concentration are less than 13% and the correlation coefficient is 0.9998. Rolling-Circle Filter was utilized to subtract fluorescence background and the optimal results were obtained when the radius of the analyzing circle is 650 cm−1.

We have developed an algorithm for solving an inverse problem related to the reconstruction of spectral dependences of terahertz (THz) optical characteristics of a homogeneous medium in the form of a plane-parallel plate, which is based on processing signals obtained by a THz time-domain spectrometer. In contrast to existing methods, the developed algorithm allows studying the optical properties of dielectric samples that have a small thickness (down to 0.1 mm) and low index of refraction. Optical characteristics in the THz spectral range are determined by minimization of the error functional constructed based on experimental and theoretical complex transfer functions of the sample, wherein the theoretical transfer function is obtained by using a model of a Fabry-Perot quasi-resonator. The proposed method is experimentally verified by studying optical properties of test samples. The reconstructed THz optical characteristics are compared with the characteristics of the same test media obtained by means of the THz backward-wave oscillator spectroscopy, which allowed estimating the accuracy of the proposed method.

Summer school in Kabardino-Balkaria by BMSTU SPIE Student Chapter

This summer BMSTU SPIE Student Chapter have decided to visit Kabardino-Balkaria Republic of Caucasus (Russia) and spent there a week with children in a camp. It was called Summer School. We decided to organize it in order to engage talented and curious children in optics and photonics, and to show them how science could be for fun. Education and entertainment program included such activities as lectures, optical demonstrations, laser games, hiking in the forest, and others. As a result children had a good time outdoors, learned interesting facts and about optics and lasers, and of course found new friends who are keen to know more too. Four Chapter members and about 70 children of age 10-16 took part in this event.
