Sensing of Surface and Bulk Refractive Index Using Magnetophotonic Crystal with Hybrid Magneto-Optical Response

Abstract: We propose an all-dielectric magneto-photonic crystal with a hybrid magneto-optical response that allows for the simultaneous measurements of the surface and bulk refractive index of the analyzed substance. The approach is based on two different spectral features of the magneto-optical response corresponding to the resonances in p- and s-polarizations of the incident light. Angular spectra of p-polarized light have a step-like behavior near the total internal reflection angle which position is sensitive to the… Show more

“…The second effect arises from the change of the coupling efficiency of the incident light to the TSM, which is proportional to cos 2 (Ψ inc À Ψ TSM ), where Ψ inc is the polarization of the incident light and Ψ TSM is the polarization of the TSM. This effect is called a magnetophotonic intensity effect and was demonstrated for the longitudinal 114 and polar 115 configurations of the magnetic field and can also be observed in specially designed structures in a transverse magnetization configuration. 116 Due to the mixed eigenmode polarization, the resonance of TSM is seen as the intensity effect in both polarizations of the incident light.…”

“…121 The MO scheme of measurements could improve the performance of such sensors since both of the TM and TE modes are observed in the same δ spectra if both H 1 and H 2 have the transverse and polar components. 115 In this case, two resonances in the δ spectra of the same beam are independently sensitive to the bulk and surface refractive indices [Fig. 6(b)].…”

“…The following pairs of high-and low-refractive index oxides were selected for BM manufacturing: HfO 2 /SiO 2 , Ta 2 O 5 /SiO 2 and ZrO 2 /SiO 2 . The following BMs were deposited on UV grade fused silica (14 S-7-2, Standa) substrates: (HfO 2 /SiO 2 ) 8 , (Ta 2 O 5 /SiO 2 ) 7 and (ZrO 2 /SiO 2 ) 7 . The layers were deposited using the EBE technique.…”

Also, MPCs are of interest for optical sensor applications [7][8][9] and optical control of magnetization by the inverse Faraday effect [10].…”
