Sensitive Electrochemical Detection Method of Melatonin in Food Supplements

Abstract: Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamin) is a ubiquitous molecule widely distributed in nature. It is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, which plays a role in the bodys sleep cycles and it is a powerful antioxidant. It is possible to find it in several foods (fruit, rice, corn) and as food supplement. Screen-printed carbon electrode (DRP-150) and graphene modified screen-printed electrode (DRP-110GPH) were tested as sensors for the detection of melatonin using electrochemical detection (differential pulse… Show more

“…A very similar approach was reported by Miccoli et al [ 161 ] to detect MLT in food supplements using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with a G-CSPE. Graphene was suspended, and the electrodes were modified by drop-casting.…”

“…From the results showed above is deducted that by the two types of electrochemical methods using screenprinted carbon electrodes (DPV and CV) and Jenco microelectrodes (for iodide detection), iodide can be easily determined qualitatively and quantitatively. Both methods are safe and easy to use, and can be thought of as a portable system with a wide range of applicability [34][35][36][37][38][39][40] (screen electrodes are already used to detect toxic and bioactive compounds in the life sciences), alongside other validated methods for the same purpose [41][42][43][44][45][46][47]. Redox microelectrodes correlate in a good manner the redox status of the solution with KI concentration.…”

“…Graphene sheets horizontal and vertical oriented on working electrode affects the electrochemical performance, evidenced by this study. Moreover, the comparison between single layer graphene and vertical graphene is an essential step for applications, so in function of application we can chose the graphene type [7].…”
