Sensitivity analysis of a comprehensive model for a miniature-scale linear compressor for electronics cooling

Abstract: A comprehensive model of a linear compressor for electronics cooling was previously presented by Bradshaw et al. (2011). The current study expands upon this work by first developing methods for predicting the resonant frequency of a linear compressor and for controlling its piston stroke. Key parameters governing compressor performance -leakage gap, eccentricity, and piston geometry -are explored using a sensitivity analysis. It is demonstrated that for optimum performance, the leakage gap and frictional param… Show more

“…The use of linear compressors for refrigeration has been widely studied both in traditional applications such as domestic refrigeration, as well as in small-scale refrigeration due to the advantages over the conventional crank-drive reciprocating compressors [85]. Detailed numerical models have been developed and validated to improve the design and therefore the performance of these compressors [86,87], as well as experimental tests [55], where a constant-speed, oil-free linear compressor was used for electronics cooling in aeronautical applications, in which the mass flow and cooling capacity were controlled by varying the piston stroke. This same micro compressor was presented by Ribeiro [54].…”

“…Some experimental works have evaluated the refrigeration of linear compressors in different evaporating temperatures and condensing temperatures [4][5][6][7][8] using different refrigerants. Furthermore, some researchers have investigated the operation characteristics of linear compressors by establishing mathematical models and experimental observations [9][10][11][12]. These works contain the operating characteristics of linear motors, the gas leakage through the gap between the piston and the cylinder, the gas force nonlinear characteristics, the piston stroke, frequency regulation, etc.…”
