Separation of phenanthrene/N‐tetradecane mixtures (model diesel) via pervaporation using an aromatic polyimide membrane

Abstract: The present investigation focuses on the separation of phenanthrene (a polyaromatic hydrocarbon) from n-tetradecane (model diesel composition) via pervaporation using a fabricated aromatic polyimide membrane. The experiments demonstrate preferential permeation of the polyaromatic for all films within the studied experimental range. The influence of operating temperature, membrane pretreatment time, membrane composition, and membrane thickness on the pervaporative performance were investigated. Statistical soft… Show more

“…After the hydrothermal treatment with the low concentration of NaOH, the samples to be further treated by the APTES/PhMe solvothermal process, the tensile strength and elongation at break were all decreased again. It may be related to the toluene swelling of Kapton matrix [35]. However, after an acid silica sol formed a coating on the Kapton surface, the tensile strength and elongation at break changed from decreasing to increasing.…”

“…PAHs are the major components of diesel automobile emission particles due to incomplete combustion; most of these are known human carcinogens . According to Worldwide Fuel Charter, organized jointly by automakers and engine manufacturers, the maximum allowable concentration of PAHs in automotive diesel should be <2% volume (max) . Hence, removal of PAHs from diesel is absolutely necessary.…”

“…Pervaporation (PV), as a new separation technology, has been widely used in gasoline desulfurization due to its low capital investment, less energy consumption and environmentally friendly . In recent years, several types of membrane materials have been developed and investigated for the deep desulfurization of FCC gasoline via pervaporation, include polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) , polyethylene glycol (PEG) , polyimides (PI) , hydroxy ethyl cellulose (HEC) , etc. Among these membranes, PDMS, as one of the typical membrane, has been widely used for pervaporation desulfurization.…”
