Sequential auction based parking space sharing and pricing mechanism in the era of sharing economy

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design a parking space management platform to alleviate the parking problem and a two-stage solution for sharing and allocating parking spaces. Design/methodology/approach The market design mechanism and auction mechanism are integrated to solve the problem of parking space sharing and allocation. In the first stage, the market design mechanism with two rules is applied for making the good use of idle parking spaces. In the second stage, two sequential auction mechanis… Show more

“…Additionally, Sheu et al [32] optimized the operation of logistics distribution, and proposed an integrated logistics operation model in a given green-supply chain, which can increase the total net profit based on government policies. Tan et al [33] combined auction theory and market design theory congestion reduction to realize sustainable traffic levels. Holman et al [34] stated that the basic principle of sustainable logistics management in the 21st century is wholeness in systems thinking, and confirmed its basic role in the interaction of the performance of the logistics system components and the external environment.…”

“…a. Parking Space Sharing In parking space sharing, parking space owners can temporarily exchange their parking spaces with other owners for free, or rent at a rental price to the intermediary that operates the parking space sharing service [177]. Based on first-price and second-price sealed auctions, Tan, Xu [177] proposed a sequential auction mechanism, which enables the intermediary to allocate parking spaces to requesters at a price; the allocation price can then be referenced by the intermediary when setting the rental price.…”

“…Facing such a huge gap, it is difficult to solve it by increasing the number of parking spaces, and it is more important to improve the utilization of existing parking spaces. Therefore, with the support of technologies such as Internet of Things and big data [1], a shared parking platform [2][3][4] is established to share the private parking spaces in the community that are idle due to residents going to work and other reasons during free hours for those in demand to alleviate parking demand. However, compared with professional parking lots, communities cover a larger area, parking spaces are sparsely distributed, and each shared parking space has a different sharing period, thus giving rise to the problem of optimizing the resource allocation of shared parking spaces.…”
