Serial Implantations of Larval Schistosoma mansoni from Infected to Uninfected Snails

Abstract: The long-term maintenance of Schistosoma mansoni in intermediate snail hosts is described. Snails were infected with one or five miracidia to obtain the initial parasitized liver tissue. The serial implantations were conducted. When the materials for serial implantation were obtained 20 to 60 days after the hosts had begun to release cercariae, the proportion of snails becoming infected was higher than when materials obtained earlier were used. It made no difference whether the initial infection was with one o… Show more

“…Perhaps the technique's greatest benefit has been the perpetual maintenance of schistosome clones Nojima et al 1980;Cohen and Eveland 1984;Jourdane 1984Jourdane , 1990. In addition to circumventing the requirement for a vertebrate-host (Jourdane 1990), schistosome clones obtained by this technique can be maintained and biologically characterized (Cohen and Eveland 1988).…”

“…This balanced salt solution has been used with various combinations of antibiotics (Chernin 1963;Cohen and Eveland 1984;Jourdane et al 1985). Diluted Schneider's Drosophila medium (110 mOsm/Kg H 2 O) was used in one study (Nojima et al 1980). Parasitized tissues (hepatopancreas and ovotestis) are excised and cut into 1-2 mm 3 fragments using iris scissors (Chernin 1966;Cohen 1984).…”
