Seroepidemiology of Cytomegalovirus Infection in Pregnant Women in the Central Mexican City of Aguascalientes

Abstract: BackgroundInfection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) during pregnancy may lead to congenital disease. Very little is known about the seroepidemiology of CMV infection in pregnant women in Mexico. We sought to determine the seroprevalence and correlates of CMV infection in pregnant women in Aguascalientes City, Mexico.MethodsThrough a cross-sectional study design, 289 pregnant women were examined for anti-CMV IgG and IgM antibodies in Aguascalientes City, Mexico. A standardized questionnaire was used to obtain the so… Show more

“…Anti-cytomegalovirus antibodies can be detected in 86% to 96% of the general population and in about 95% of pregnant women. 14 Most individuals have latent infections. When immunity is diminished in pregnant women, latent infections can become virulent and be transmitted to the newborn through milk.…”

“…Seroprevalence among women of reproductive age suggests a potential increase with age; however, these findings are limited by the small dataset. Seroprevalence of CMV infection in pregnant women in Mexico was higher in those aged 20 to 30 years than those aged ≤ 20 years (91.3 vs 86.5%, respectively) [ 44 ]. Studies from Canada and the United States indicate that seroprevalence was higher among women aged > 40 years compared with women aged ≤ 40 years [ 45 47 ].…”

“…Also, in the study conducted by Mamuye et al (10), there was no significant correlation between seropositivity to CMV and education, employment, gestation age and parity. In in the research from Mexico, no socio-demographic characteristics of pregnant women including age, ethnic group, place of birth, housing, place of work, education level, low socioeconomic status were associated (P> 0.05) with seropositivity to CMV (27). While a study in Tanzania proved that older age, multiparity, and low socioeconomic status were significantly associated with CMV IgG seroprevalence (p <0.01) (33).…”
