Seroprevalence of Bartonella henselae and Toxoplasma gondii among Healthy Individuals in Thailand.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The seroprevalence of Bartonella henselae and Toxoplasma gondii among apparently healthy individuals, mainly blood donors, in Thailand was investigated by an indirect fluorescent antibody technique and by a latex agglutination test, respectively. Of 163 serum samples examined, 9 (5.5%) were found to be positive for B. henselae-IgG, 2 (1.2%) for B. henselae-IgM, and 5 (3.1%) for the T. gondii antibody. No significant difference was observed between male and female samples in the serological test with … Show more

“…Despite the absence of any clinical report of cases of CSD in this country, we were able to document the presence of B. henselae antibodies in ϳ 5.5% of healthy Thai people, 24 a percentage very similar to what has been observed in other countries where CSD is endemic. [28][29][30] However, further investigation is necessary to better understand the epidemiology of CSD in Asian countries.…”

“…It is estimated that the cat population in Thailand is ϳ 2 million. Although Maruyama and others 24 showed the presence of B. henselae antibodies in healthy people in Thailand, there are no reports yet on the prevalence of Bartonella species in domestic cats from this country and on the 16S rRNA gene types of B. henselae.…”

“…The frozen sera were thawed at room temperature and treated at 56 C for 30 min to inactivate the complement. The IFA procedure was followed by the method reported previously (11). The intensity of the bacillus-specific fluorescence was scored subjectively from 1 to 4, and the fluorescence score of 2 was considered to be positive at a dilution of 1:64 *The rate is significantly higher than that of other sources (P 0.001).…”

“…Data on human infections have been limited to culturing strains of two Bartonella species ( B. henselae , agent of cat scratch disease and B. tamiae , a novel human pathogen recently described from cases of febrile illness 3,4 ) and two serological investigations. 5 Bartonella species have been isolated in Thailand from many mammalian hosts, including rodents, cats, and dogs. [6][7][8] No studies, however, have systematically assessed the scope of Bartonella species isolated from humans in Thailand or examined linkages to zoonotic sources.…”
