Seroprevalence of Bartonellaspp. infection in HIV patients in Catalonia, Spain

Abstract: Background: Although the first clinical descriptions of Bartonella infection were associated with immunocompromised patient with bacillary angiomatosis, we currently know that this organism is directly involved in diseases affecting a large number of patients, regardless of their immune status. Cat scratch disease, hepatic peliosis, and some cases of bacteraemia and endocarditis, are directly caused by some species of the genus Bartonella. The purpose of this study was to determinate the prevalence of IgG anti… Show more

“…In fact, at the time of blood sampling, 63.6% of the HIVþ subjects did not have AIDS and had H-CD4, 22.3% did have AIDS and H-CD4, 7.9% did have AIDS with L-CD4, and 6.2% did not have AIDS and had L-CD4. As reported by other researchers (12), there was no statistically significant association between AIDS status or CD4þ T cell counts related to R. typhi and R. felis seropositivities. In fact, 61.5% of R. typhi and 66.7% of R. felis seropositive subjects did not have AIDS symptoms and had H-CD4; 27% and 20%, respectively, had AIDS disease and H-CD4; 11.5% and 6.6%, respectively, had AIDS and L-CD4; and 6.6% of R. felis seropositive patients did not have AIDS and had L-CD4.…”

“…In Spain, six different Bartonella species have been described so far (B. henselae, B. quintana, B. clarridgeiae, B. taylorii, B. alsatica, and B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii), affecting humans, cats, dogs, rabbits, and small mammals (10,19,21,(23)(24)(25). More recently, the use of new molecular tools has allowed us to detect a large repertoire of Bartonella species and genotypes circulating among the small mammals in the Basque Country, Northern Spain (12).…”

“…2 Surgical debridement and systemic antifungals are the mainstay of therapy, despite which related morbidity and mortality are high. 1,3 The optimal choice of antifungals for the treatment of mucormycosis remains controversial. 4,5 We describe the effective treatment of a surgically-related cerebral mucormycosis in a patient with an extensive astrocytoma and discuss the therapeutic approach taken.…”
