Seroprevalence of hepatitis B infection and associated risk factors among drug users in drop-in centers of Isfahan, Iran

Abstract: Background:Scientists perceive drug users (DUs) as a high-risk population for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Effective strategies aiming at the reduction of HBV infection can be depicted when its epidemiological status is clearly defined. The present study provides new insight into associated risk factors of HBV infection and its seroepidemiological status among DUs attending drop-in centers (DICs).Methods:This was a cross-sectional study, which was implemented in 7 DICs of Isfahan province. “…In this study, those who had multiple sexual partners in the last 1 year were almost 10 times more like to be infected by HBV than their counterparts. This finding is similar to studies conducted in Tigray Ethiopia [ 28 ], North-west Ethiopia [ 24 , 42 ] Slovakia [ 43 ] and in Iran [ 44 ]. This is a scientifically well-established fact where parental and sexual route play an important role in the transmission of HBV.…”

“…Age, sex, and other sociodemographic characteristics were not significantly associated with the HBV infection spread. This is consistent with the study carried out in Pakistan [26], but not in conformity with the study carried out in North East Ethiopia [28] and Iran [29]. One of the identified risk factors in this study was a history of blood oath (p = 0.0036).…”
