Seroprevalence of human parvovirus B19 in a suburban population in São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To analyze the prevalence of IgG antibodies to human parvovirus B19. METHODS:Cross-sectional study in a suburban community in São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, between November 1990 and January 1991. Randomly selected (N=435) representative samples of sera were collected from healthy children older than 15 days old and adults up to 40 years old. IgG antibodies were detected using ELISA. RESULTS:High prevalence of IgG antibodies to B19 parvovirus was found in 87% of newborns. The prevalence of maternall… Show more

“…The prevalence (91%) was higher than that observed in our patients. In fact, we found rates similar to those obtained in larger seroprevalence studies in Brazilian immunocompetent adults, whose seropositivity rates ranged from 71.6-73.7% (Nascimento et al 1990, Silva et al 2006, Huatuco et al 2008. Gyllensten et al (1994) searched retrospectively 69 HIV-infected patients with anaemia.…”

“…The seroprevalence reach approximately 42% in the 5-31 age group, which results in high susceptibility during childbearing years with intense viral activity in the age groups, confirming an increasing trend in the proportion of seropositive individuals as age increases. This data is similar to other studies (Anderson 1987, Nascimento et al 1990, Abarca et al 2002, Ooi et al 2002, Ziyaeyan et al 2005, Wildig 2007, Huatuco et al 2008). …”

“…Although, data on B19V seroprevalence in Brazil are available [Wermelinger et al, 2002; Huatuco et al, 2008; Amaku et al, 2009], the epidemiological aspects of this infection in patients with hemoglobinopathies have not been evaluated. A single study [Sant'Anna et al, 2002], which included a significant number of patients with sickle cell disease, revealed low anti‐B19 IgG reactivity (32.2%).…”
