Seroprevalence of Varicella in the French Population

Abstract: Most varicella-zoster virus infections occur during early childhood. Seroprevalence rates reach approximately 50% by 4 years of age and approximately 90% by 8 years. Therefore, the best strategy to reduce the prevalence of wild-type varicella-zoster virus in the French population would be to immunize children 12-18 months of age, as is currently performed in the United States.

“…Furthermore, our estimates of cumulative incidence of varicella at age 11 years are similar to that of a recent independent French seroprevalence study (90 % at age 11 years [24]) as well as earlier figures in France [25]. However, the cumulative incidence in Corsica appeared to be shifted towards higher ages, by <1 year, compared to those reported in continental France [24]. This may be due to our correct handling of age in our models, expressed in completed years using methods for interval-censored data ; but it could also be the consequence of a lower population density in Corsica in relation to other French regions.…”

“…This is in line with data regarding the seroprevalence of anti-VZV antibodies in the French population (11). In another study conducted in France at the end of 2005, 1.2% of 486 pregnant women included were seronegative for VZV (20).…”

“…In France, an age-specific prevalence study reported seroprevalence rates of about 50% by the age of 4 years and 90% by 8 years (11). The disease is usually benign but may lead to severe complications and occasionally death (6,17).…”

“…Cependant, la séroprévalence de la varicelle chez les professionnels de santé est d'au moins 98 % et la mise en oeuvre d'une obligation se heurterait au fait que la majorité des personnels en poste se souviennent avoir fait la varicelle, sans pouvoir en apporter la preuve, sauf à pratiquer une sérologie 36 . Pour ces raisons, le maintien d'une recommandation forte pour les professionnels non immunisés, telle qu'elle existe actuellement, parait plus adapté.…”
