“…In Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, residents report triatomines, the vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, burrow in accumulated trash, cardboard, and rocks (110). Strong entomological (109,110) and clinical (107,108) evidence supports this local perception. Dumonteil et al (109) conducted entomological surveillance for one year in 38 randomly selected houses and created crude and adjusted models in which they observed a strong association between the practice of cleaning of trash from the peridomicile and house infestation by nondomiciliated Triatoma dimidiate (109).…”

“…Clinical evidence also supports these findings. Trypanosoma cruzi infection seroprevalence in Venezuela was associated with the increase of accumulated garbage (108) and household disarray (measured as old and/or damaged artifacts accumulated, materials from construction, inadequate cleaning and free rubbish in the home) (107). Bonfante-Cabarcas et al (107) speculate that accumulated garbage favors breeding of T. cruzi reservoirs (rats, mice, and opossum) and provides long-term refuge with immediate food sources for insects to reproduce and colonize the house for a long time, increasing the probability of intra-domiciliary vector transmission of T. cruzi.…”

“…The residence location is related to the place where the household the individual lives at is built, be it in rural, periurban, or urban zone, community, municipality, or region. The geographic locations of households according to the definition of rural zones [59][60][61][62], periurban and urban [55,57,63], as well as vulnerability of the areas [29,64,65].…”

“…The construction of precarious housing, often due to difficulties accessing suitable building materials [31,52], occurs alongside wild habitats of triatomines, facilitating vector domiciliation [62]. Furthermore, rural communities often coexist with synanthropic animals in and around their homes, serving as potential reservoirs for T. cruzi [64,70].…”
