“…They have been described, without comment, in the corresponding tectal layers of the viper (Rio et al 1995), in the isthmo-optic nucleus of the pigeon Rio et al 2002), the nucleus dorsolateralis anterior of the same species (Miceli et al 2008), and in the nucleus geniculatus lateralis dorsalis of mammals (Papadopoulos and Parnavelas 1990;Pásik et al 1988). In the latter cases it has been shown that they correspond to serotoninergic terminals.…”

“…Presynaptic terminals of vertebrates and invertebrates store serotonin in conventional clear vescles and in some cases, in large dense core vesicles (Kuffler et al, 1987;Van Bockstaele et al, 1994;Smiley and Goldman-Rakic, 1996;Liem and Copray, 1996;Rio et al, 2002). In addition, dense core vesicles at some serotonergic terminals may contain peptides such as substance P (Dey and Hoffpauir, 1986) and others.…”

“…Even allowing for an underestimate of Tgr1 terminals, it is quite likely that the unlabeled profiles with rounded synaptic vesicles belong to other afferent supplies to the GLd, which have been observed in the turtle under light microscopy, particularly a cholinergic (Kenigfest et al, 2001) or serotoninergic (Ueda et al, 1983; Kenigfest et al, 2001) supply. Electron microscopic studies of the visual systems of birds and mammals have shown that terminals immunolabeled by antibodies directed against these two substances can be described as RSD in Guillery's (1969) terminology (de Lima et al, 1985; de Lima and Singer, 1987; Pásik et al, 1988, 1990; Seguela et al, 1989; Raczkowski and Fitzpatrick, 1989; Papadopoulos and Parnavelas, 1990; Dinopoulos et al, 1995; Erisir et al, 1997; Rio et al, 2002; Sherman and Guillery, 2002), brainstem cholinergic terminals making up roughly one‐half of all RSD in the cat GLd (Erisir et al, 1997).…”
