“…In an earlier study on colibacillosis in animals, Glantz (1971) determined the serotype of E. coli isolated from piglets, calves, lambs, young birds and rabbits. Of the 10 serotypes listed in Tables I and 2, only the first four appear on the lists of Glantz (1971), i.e., the VTEC serotypes currently most frequently reported. Of these, serotypes OIII:H-and 026:HII were associated with bovine colibacillosis, serotype 05:H-with ovine colibacillosis and serotype 0103:H2, with lapine colibacillosis.…”

“…Serotyping was performed by standard methods at The E. coli Reference Center, The Pennsylvania State University (Wilson and Francis, 1986). E. coli strains were grown overnight in tryptic soy broth, then heated to 1008C for 2 h. Agglutinations were performed by using preselected dilutions of each of 183 O group antisera in microtitre plates and the positive reactions were confirmed by microtitre titrations against monovalent antisera (Glantz, 1971). If there was no agglutination in the preliminary screening assay, the bacterial suspension was reheated at 1218C for an additional 1 h and the microtitre agglutination assays were repeated.…”

“…Serotyping was performed on 4 of the 6 strains using standard methods at the Escherichia coli Reference Center, Pennsylvania State University. 8,25 The 6 animals examined were presented to the Veterinary Medical Center at Michigan State University for medical care. At the time of fecal collection, 5 of the 6 animals had diarrhea ( Table 1).…”
