“…In accord with our previous study [51], for currently unclear reasons, ASCA levels were generally higher in the IgG class than the IgA class. By contrast, IgA class ASCA seems to be more consistently elevated in IBD [48,52]. Which of these two antibody classes is the more useful marker in CD would be an interesting subject for further research.…”

“…We previously found most of the potential CD patients to already exhibit the microbial markers before the development of villous damage or autoantibodies [21], reflecting the situation in the relatives in the present study. Interestingly, Torres and colleagues recently showed that ASCA also predicts forthcoming Crohn's disease up to five years before the diagnosis [48]. More studies are needed to determine the role of these markers in early development of CD and whether they could be utilized to predict the disease in at-risk groups.…”

“…Previous clinical data showed that co‐existence of H pylori with Candida is associated with the development of gastric ulcers, proposing potential synergism of these microorganisms in initiating digestive diseases 74 . Anti‐ Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA) have been proved predictive of Crohn's disease (CD) 75 . Interestingly, researchers found an inverse relationship between H pylori infection and the presence of ASCA 76 .…”

“…It is on this complex background that 2 studies published in Gastroenterology this month point us in different directions along the etiologic and diagnostic hunt. 3,4 In the article by Nair et al, 3 the authors relate the presence of heavy metals in baby teeth to the later development of Crohn's disease. They lead off their discussion by suggesting that this finding is a key link to urbanization associated with Crohn's disease.…”

“…In the study by Torres et al, 4 a serum bank of Department of Defense recruits was accessed to study for microbial antibodies and immune-inflammatory markers for 5 years antedating diagnoses of either Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Anti-Flagellin X and ASCA-IgA were predictive of Crohn's disease.…”
