Serum copeptin levels in adolescents with primary hypertension

Abstract: BackgroundThe prevalence of hypertension continues to rise in the pediatric population. In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of reports on serum arginine vasopressin and its derivative, copeptin, in blood pressure control, but its role is still unclear. The objective of this study was to assess serum copeptin in adolescents with essential hypertension.MethodsThe study cohort consisted of 84 subjects (30 girls and 54 boys) aged 11–18 years, divided into two groups: hypertension (HT) – 53 subject… Show more

“…In fact, recent studies reported an association of copeptin levels with hypertension in middle-aged men and women 27 and with increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure on 24-hour-ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in adolescents with essential hypertension. 28 In our study, we detected higher copeptin levels in hypertensives, but the predictive value of copeptin was independent of hypertension status. However, currently, there are no data on copeptin in relation to specific blood pressure variables (such as variability or peak systolic blood pressure) in patients with stroke or TIA.…”

“…100 Third, subjects with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance have elevated plasma copeptin levels. [101][102][103][104] Fourth, elevated levels of plasma copeptin predict development of diabetes 96,105 and obesity. 96 Although inadequate hydration and hot temperatures facilitate hyperosmolarity, it could also be enhanced by a high intake of salt with a less than adequate intake of water.…”

“…However, we have previously shown that its elevated concentration predicted a rapid weight loss after kidney transplantation and characterize the subgroup of patients with greater overhydration [23]. According to previous studies, regulation of CT-proAVP metabolism in patients with chronic kidney disease is disturbed [24,25]. Plasma concentrations of CT-proAVP are greatly increased in haemodialysis patients, most likely reflecting its accumulation [26].…”
