SERUM FOLATE AND VITAMIN‐B12 LEVELS IN THE ELDERLY

Abstract: The serum levels of folic acid and vitamin B12 were estimated in 3 groups of subjects: Group 1 consisted of 59 elderly patients screened from 152 consecutive hospital admissions from homes for the aged and from a geriatric center; Group 2 consisted of 51 geriatric patients admitted to the hospital from their own homes; and Group 3 (controls) consisted of 100 younger healthy subjects who were not in the hospital. Medication with drugs known to interfere with the biologic assay of these vitamins was the chief re… Show more

“…Like folate, vitamin B 12 levels in our study were greatly depressed in the elderly (Fig. 12); values in old age are significantly lower and decrease as age advances (30–32). Mental deterioration is associated with vitamin B 12 deficiency (33); some think that the decline in vitamin B 12 with aging is correlated with senile dementia (34).…”

“…Whereas some investigators have reported that serum vitamin B 12 levels are relatively constant throughout life, 50–52 others have found decreasing levels with increasing age 53–55 . However, none of these studies controlled for the presence of atrophic gastritis.…”

“…However, findings concerning serum B 12 and serum erythrocyte folate concentration in the aged have varied. Some investigators have found a decrease in the serum vitamin B 12 level in the aged 19,20 whereas others have found that the serum B 12 level remains constant throughout life 21,22 . Similarly, in some studies, measurements of serum and erythrocyte folate concentration in the aged have shown that the level is unchanged, 21,23 whereas in other studies these concentrations have been shown to decrease with age 24–25 .…”
