Serum interleukin-6, interleukin-8, andβ 2-Microglobulin in early assessment of severity of acute pancreatitis comparison with serum C-reactive protein

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of serum interleukin-6, interleukin-8, beta 2-microglobulin, and C-reactive protein in the assessment of the severity of acute pancreatitis using commercial kits for their respective assays. Thirty-eight patients with acute pancreatitis (25 men, 13 women, mean age 59 years, range 16-97) were studied; the diagnosis was based on prolonged upper abdominal pain associated with a twofold increase of serum lipase, and it was c… Show more

“…Differences involving continuous variables, which were expressed as means with standard deviations, were analyzed with the ManneWhitney and [30] was used to identify the SWV value that best discriminated between patients and healthy controls, and the sensitivity and specificity of this cut-off value were also determined.…”

“…Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to differentiate patients with pancreatic adenocarcinomas from those with pancreatic IPMNs. The best cut-off values were chosen to be the values of the assays which maximized the likelihood ratio (LR) obtained using the following formula: LRs(Probability of true positiveqProbability of true negative)/(Probability of false positiveqProbability of false negative) (9). The SPSS (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA, Version 13.0) statistical package was used to analyze the data.…”

“…Hallazgos similares son los obtenidos por Heresbach (30) y Mayer (18), aunque la mayoría de las publicaciones detectan los valores máxi-mos antes de las 48 horas (31)(32)(33)(34)(35). En cualquier caso, la IL-6 es considerada la más útil clínicamente como marcador de gravedad (35)(36)(37)(38)(39).…”
