Serum lipids, glucose and insulin levels in healthy schoolchildren aged 9 and 15 years from central Sweden: Reference values in relation to biological, social and lifestyle factors

Abstract: Pubertal status (biological age) should to be considered in the interpretation of serum values in schoolchildren rather than chronological age. The interpretation of insulin values should include both body mass index and physical activity level, and perhaps also season. Previously described regional differences in serum lipid levels in Swedish adults seem to be present also in children.

“…The homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) was calculated [16] as fasting insulin (mU/l)×fasting glucose (mmol/l)/22.5 (to convert insulin values in mU/l to pmol/l multiply by 6.945). A detailed description of the blood analysis has been reported elsewhere [17].…”

“…EYHS was a school-based cross-sectional study of youth with TD, where PA and sedentary time were measured using an Actigraph accelerometer (model 7164; ActiGraph LLC, Pensacola, FL) in the same way as used with the youth with disabilities in the present study. Study design, selection criteria, and basic characteristics of the participants in the EYHS are reported elsewhere (Hurtig-Wennlöf, Yngve, Nilsson & Sjöström, 2005;Wennlöf, Yngve, & Sjöström, 2003).…”
